Slidell is a large town in south-western Louisiana, situated along the Mississippi River. It is the second largest city in Marks and Fields County, with a population of nearly eight hundred thousand. The history of Slidell dates back to eighteen fifty, when it was first settled by French Canadians and former slaves of the settlers. A French mission was built here, and the local Native Americans maintained a presence even today. Most of Slidell’s native inhabitants are of French or Spanish descent, although many more people (mostly foreigners) have made Slidell their home over time.
The town of Slidell is considered the southernmost point on the Mississippi River, and to this day, there are still numerous bridges, creeks and other points of interest that will take you to the other side. If you love to fish, you can do that year-round in the Big Hole River, which flows just west of Slidell. The Bogue Sound is another favorite area for nature-lovers, with numerous walleye and other great catches available. Local art classes regularly host workshops and shows that attract both local art enthusiasts and visitors from the surrounding cities and counties. The “Bogue Arts Walk” showcases local talent and art forms. This annual event also includes wine tasting and a variety of local food and wine products.
If you love to fiddle and sing, you will definitely enjoy taking art classes in Slidell. The Slidell Cholesterol Art Guitar class, for instance, is held every Thursday night at the Granada Resort. Classes are taught by Jim Combs, a native of Slidell whose musical influences include Buddy Holly, Merle Haggard, and Van Morrison. Class fees include all materials and set up, and lessons usually last around twenty minutes.
There are also numerous local theaters that will hold performances of all genres, both local and regional, often for free. Check the local newspaper for times and locations. For more upscale events, you might try the Pickens City Arts Association or Slidell Chamber of Commerce. The latter has a schedule of special events posted on their web site. They include chamber music, fireworks, dinner, and various fireworks displays.
At the Granada Resort, you can relax while enjoying the fine dining restaurants, gorgeous pools, and fitness centers. The Pickens City Arts Association features events such as the “Swing to Remember” music concert, a benefit concert for the children of the community, a film night, and more. It is located at the center of Slidell. There are also various shops in town and on the resort that cater to your every need. You can buy souvenirs, arts and crafts, and gift items.
There are also art schools in Slidell that will teach you the latest techniques and skills. These classes are offered by some of the best artists in the world. You can choose an art school based on your own interests or based on the particular style of art that you want to learn. The classes will teach you many of the things that you will be able to use later on when you go out and make a living as an artist.
