As I was growing up, my favorite thing to do was to go to the comic book store. While TV, movies, iPods and other electronic media have become the main mode of entertainment for millions of Americans today, there’s something especially special about going to a comic store to browse through many different comic books and maybe to even buy one. Nowadays, it’s so easy to just sit down in front of our computer and flip through the channels or the news… but when you were a kid, there was no option for that. You had to wait in line at the movie theater, or go to your favorite restaurant. There was no choice!
So where can you buy old comic books online? Well, luckily, there are a number of established websites that sell a wide range of collectible and rare comic books. Some specialize in superheroes, some in classic and independent comics, some in late night and monthly comics. If you’re looking for original superhero comics, then ComicShop is an excellent resource. They have an amazing selection of original superhero comics, as well as popular classic reprints, and you can even buy some of the older collected editions of your favorite comic book series, for great prices.
If you’re looking for a specific type of superhero comic, then you’ll also want to visit a site that has that kind of content. My personal favorites are always the Batman and Superman sites. Batman Super Buys offers a huge selection of the latest Batman comics, including some classic storylines (including the Dark Knight), and they have a lot of older material as well. I love browsing through the graphic novel section, and getting to see old masterpieces like Detective Comics #1 and All Star Batman. Superman is also a great site for any comic book collectors, offering a wide selection of titles, whether you are interested in Superman comics, or classic Superman comic books or graphic novels. There are even sections devoted specifically to Superman collectibles.
A great alternative for the more serious comic book collector, who is interested in buying older comics and collecting rare comic books is Bleeding Heart, which is the only online comic book store that sells hardcovers in their store. These covers are usually considered museum quality, with almost no circulation whatsoever! That’s right, you can find entire issues of classic Superman comic books that are completely uncut, with NO circulation! It’s incredible to see how far back into the past people are willing to go, for these valuable items. In fact, many of these “hypothetical” hardcover comics were actually written by DC comic writers and artists, who wanted to show the readers exactly what happened after Superman went off the air, so they included it in the comic.
Other stores might not have the actual characters portrayed in the comics, but are happy to sell you merchandise based on the concept of the story. For example, you might be interested in toys or statues based on Catwoman, or The Phantom. An online comic book store can offer you all these items, all with the famous cover art of their favorite comic book series depicted on them. This could make it easier for you to build your collection without having to worry about the value of your items, since you aren’t actually purchasing anything that has any real worth.
Even if you don’t have any interest in purchasing comic books, but simply want to browse through a wide selection of top selling, behind the times, superhero comics for free, an online store can still be a very helpful resource. For example, you might want to read a recent storyline and quickly find out why the latest movie is so popular. That way, you can take advantage of the hype of a movie promotion, without having to pay any money!
